Women’s Experiences and Outcomes of Abortion Care in Addis Ababa Health Facilities: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abortion remains controversial worldwide, with political, legal, and sociocultural discourses shaping abortion policies, service availability, and societal attitudes toward abortion. Although evidence shows that safe abortion services are essential to reducing abortion-related morbidity and mortality, many women continue to face barriers such as stigma, discrimination, and poor-quality care when seeking services. These challenges are particularly pronounced in resource-limited settings, where unsafe abortion remains a major contributor to maternal deaths. Negash's research aims to explore women's experiences and outcomes of abortion care and to develop and validate Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for abortion services in Ethiopia.

Experience and Research Focus
Negash is a midwifery researcher and PhD candidate at Curtin University with over 16 years of experience in teaching, research, and academic leadership in Ethiopia. His research focuses on maternal and reproductive health, particularly women-centred care, quality of abortion services, and health service measurement. He authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and served as an Executive Board Member of the Ethiopian Midwives Association, where he also chaired the National Research Advisory Committee. His current research aims to strengthen evidence-based and person-centred abortion care through the development and validation of patient-reported measurement tools.
